TCR is following the training of an aspiring yachting who is taking
the Blue Water Yachting Summer School course, aimed at 16- to
18-year-olds who would like to become professional yacht crew. Here is his sixth installment: STCW 95 Part II
Two weeks in Antibes has absolutely flown by and today the STCW 95, and with it the Bluewater Yachting Summer School fortnight, ended with a barbecue and morning of jetski races. Both the STCW 95 and the Summer School in general were absolutely fantastic, the last three days of the STCW 95 were all spent at Blue Water Yaching’s fire centre in Biot learning how to use breathing apparatus and how to extinguish different types of fire. Arguably, more than any other, the STCW 95 course has been the most serious and universally useful. Fire and first aid are key skills that continue to be useful on shore and not only in a marine environment.
Once again the course focused around practical sessions with shorter morning theory lessons used to prepare the group for the afternoon ahead. Everyone I’ve spoken to in Antibes about the STCW 95 has emphasised how exciting and exhilarating the fire modules were and the Blue Water Yachting fire centre certainly didn’t disappoint. Once again the equipment was top quality, the crew who instructed us excellent and the result was three more days of great fun and a serious qualification at the end of it.
With the end of the course, I’m off to try put my new-found qualifications to use and find a job as a deckhand in the superyachting industry! Tomorrow is dockwalking in Antibes and Monaco…
